Neil Armstrong Lied About About 'One Small Step for Man' Speech?

| By

Neil Armstrong lied about the famous "one small step for man" words he spoke as he took mans first steps in space, according to new comments made by his brother.

Neil Armstrong said in interviews after he made the momentous journey to the moon in 1969 that he had spontaneously come up with that sentence "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

A BBC documentary that interviewed Dean has explained how the brothers were playing a game of Risk together when Neil handed his sibling a small piece of paper with the legendary words on them.

The documentary is called "Neil Armstrong: First Man on the Moon" and explains Dean's assertion that his brother handed him the paper asking him, "What do you think about that?"

"I said, 'Fabulous.'" The less-famous Armstrong also says that the original line was "that's one small step for A man," settling 40 years of debate over that dropped "a."

Despite listening to the recording closely in 1999, Armstrong admitted that he could not hear the "a," but insisted it may have been due to static.

However, in 2006, a computer expert analyzed the recording and supported Armstrong's claims. Furthermore, NASA stood by his story and that, arguably, put an end to the historic bickering.

Neil Alden Armstrong was born on Aug. 5, 1930 in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He died on Aug. 25, 2012, just weeks after his 82nd birthday. The astronaut's family shared the sad news of his death at the time in a statement that reads, in part, "We are heartbroken to share the news that Neil Armstrong has passed away following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures."
