Michael Phelps has split from his model girlfriend Megan Rossee after dating for less than a year and is back on the market.
According to TMZ, the 22-time Olympic medalist ended the relationship because he felt it "wasn't going anywhere" and wanted the opportunity to "pursue other options."
Though the couple have not yet officially admitted to the break up, USA Today reports that both Phelps and Rossee posted "cryptic tweets on Monday that weren't very subtle in their allusions."
"Things happen for a reason... #notme", Michael Phelps (@MichaelPhelps) tweeted.
Roughly 12 hours later, Rossee replied by saying "Yup. #truth twitter.com/meganrossee/st..."
The couple first stepped out together in August at an event in London during the Summer Olympics. They had been together since March.
Though he retired from swimming after his success at the London Games, Phelps isn't going to spend 2013 just hanging around. The newly single athlete will appear on the Golf Channel's Haney Project in February.
"I have traveled the world through swimming, but really haven't had an opportunity to experience the world through my travels," Phelps -- whose golf game will get some pointers from host Hank Haney -- has said. "As I enter this next chapter of my life, I think I will be able to shift my competitiveness to anything I put my mind to and golf is one of the things I want to focus on."
