Motorola's new smartwatch may have been a no-show at their July 28 but the latest development suggests the Moto 360 2 release date could be coming soon.
Mere hours after the said event, a device believed to be the Moto 360's successor passed through the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Interestingly, the documents only said that a "smartwatch" from Motorola was tested for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
"Unfortunately, the filling does come with a confidentiality request from Motorola, so there are no diagrams to give us a glimpse of what it could look like, but we assume it will be the successor to the Moto 360 in both name and looks," TechRadar said.
The certification is a big deal because as Gotta Be Mobile pointed out, "[it] is usually one of the final hurdles a device needs to jump over before being released to the public."
Motorola may not have been ready to unveil its next-gen smartwatch at its July 28 event, according to GBM. The website further speculated that the Moto 360 2 release date could be in September as the Moto X "Pure Edition" and Moto G handsets announced at the event aren't coming out until then.
Another sign a new model is coming is that the original Moto 360 price has dropped to $150 earlier this month.
But how will the next-gen smartwatch improve upon its predecessor? Among the specs expected for the upcoming smartwatch are an Arm v7 processor, all-metal build, a round 360 x 360p display that gets rid of the "flat tire" appearance. A more user-friendly band swapping solution could also make it to the Android Wear-powered device, as per iDigitalTimes.
Rumors suggest the Moto 360 2 will be highly customizable and that it will even officially work with Apple's iOS devices, according to the website.
As it stands though, Motorola's FCC certifications is a good sign that the Moto 360 2 release date could be just around the corner.
