If you are the student who would rather spend time playing video games than doing academics, these video game scholarships might be for you. Plus, you can reportedly earn money by getting into college that focuses on video games.
According to a report by TIME, Robert Morris University in Chicago is the first to offer video game scholarships for interested students.
The report also said the video game scholarships program is part of the university's athletic department. Because of this structure, interested students will have to attend "practices and competitions" similar to what student athletes do.
The students taking the video game scholarships will reportedly play the popular game "League of Legends," in which players are teamed up to win against the opponent by destroying their home base.
School officials at the Robert Morris University believe that involving the students into these kinds of video game scholarships and in e-gaming will help them "build teamwork and communication skills."
The man behind the idea, Kurt Melcher shares why he created the video game scholarships.
"I was my idea," he said on the video by CNN. "I think everyone has a misconception of what a gamer is, that they are eating Cheetos and guzzling Mountain Dew or Red Bull, [and they're] sloppy. That's not the case"
The first batch of students was already introduced as the new gaming varsities of the school.
"When I heard that there is a university giving scholarships to play 'League of Legends,' my first reaction was this is a scam," said student Blake Soberanis on the CNN video posted on KMVT.com
Gamer and gaming scholar Alex Chapman also shared on the video that he wants to be part of history as among the first to take the video game scholarships.
"One of the main reasons joining this team was to be a part of history, the first program in the US to have a varsity [in e-sports]," he said.
Everyone is just as excited.
