It's been five years since the angsty version of Aang graced movie screens. Is it time for a new avatar "The Last Airbender" reboot to happen?
It's not a secret that M. Night Shyamalan's version of the Nickelodeon cartoon series did not impress fans and critics alike. The film, which featured racially different characters from the original as well as a very serious-looking Aang, was also reportedly "ignored" by creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante Dimartino according to Comicbook.com.
After half a decade, should other directors try their hand at making the popular cartoon into another live action film?
Comicbook Movie thought the film industry should indeed try again. However, there are certain precautions that the future producers and helmers will have to watch out for.
For one thing, the future producers should "do their casting right". The last film mostly garnered hate because of that mistake.
Producers should also turn the films into a franchise, such as the epic adaptations of "Harry Potter", "Lord Of The Rings" and "The Hunger Games". As such, the future studio should also bring a seasoned franchise director on board.
Meanwhile, MoviePilot hoped to drag in "Star Wars" screenplay writer Lawrence Kasdan to write the script for the new Avatar "The Last Airbender" reboot. Perhaps Konietzko and Dimartino would help out as well, much like George RR Martin's influence on the "Game Of Thrones" series.
As for the director? "Guardians Of The Galaxy" helmer James Gunn would reportedly be a great choice. On the other hand, Comicbook Movie mentioned the "Lord Of The Rings" director Peter Jackson as a possible (albeit an ambitious) choice.
Casting is still up the air. Although Noah Ringer had some legitimately good moves, fans thought his portrayal of Aang was very different to the original, playful version.
The new Avatar "The Last Airbender" reboot wouldn't just be confined to Aang's story as well. The new series, "Legend Of Korra" also has potential for an awesome live-action film. Should possible future producers focus on her instead or should Aang be given a chance to shine once more?
