In what may be a move to keep up with its Android rivals, a report said that iPhone 6s specs will no longer include the 16GB model.
Citing insiders within Apple supplier Foxconn, MIC Gadget said Apple's next-gen flagship device is ditching the 16GB model as the base option in favor of the 32GB model.
"We can't tell you from [which one of] Foxconn's department we received [the] information, but we can only say that the packaging of the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus don't have [a] sticker with '16GB capacity,' but all [of them will start] at 32GB to 128GB."
Giving credence to the website's claim is a report from The Korea Times last month that said the Cupertino giant is negotiating with Samsung for a higher capacity memory deal for its next-gen iPhones.
As Forbes noted, the current iPhone lineup sells at 16GB, 64GB and 128GB models. But with iOS 8 taking up 20 percent of the device's memory, "less than 13GB is available for music, movies, photos and apps" for the 16GB model.
If iPhone 6s specs move to a 32GB base model, it would bring Apple's flagship up to its rivals such as the Samsung Galaxy S6 which start with the same storage capacity.
The 16GB model debuted with 2008's original iPhone.
"It's probably time for a change," 9to5 Mac said.
Meanwhile, the A9 chip rumored to power the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus has reportedly started volume production.
Citing industry sources, DigiTimes reported that Samsung and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) "have both started production of the chips."
But before production started, Apple reportedly asked changes to the mask patters resulting in both manufacturers "to rework wafers." The modification won't affect the new iPhones' launch date however.
Apart from the A9 processor, TSMC is said to have been awarded the contract to manufacture fingerprint sensors and audio chips for upcoming iOS devices.
Other rumored iPhone 6s specs include 2GB of RAM, improved front camera, Force Touch, and a stronger frame. Apple is reportedly expecting to ship up to 90 million new iPhones by the end of the year.
