John McAfee, the anti-virus software pioneer, was hospitalized Thursday as Guatemala after he was arrested for entering the country illegally and is in the process of being deported to Belize.
McAfee was rushed to the hospital in Guatemala on Thursday after his lawyer said he suffered two mild heart attacks earlier in the day, according to Reuters. McAfee was carried out on a stretcher from an immigration service cottage where he was detained after crossing illegally into Guatemala from neighboring Belize.
Guatemalan police said they will expel McAfee, 67, to neighboring Belize, where he had been hiding for more than three weeks, according to the Associated Press. John McAfee has been on the move after he was announced as "a person of interest" over the murder of fellow American Gregory Faull.
Faull was found shot in the head in his house on the resort island of San Pedro. McAfee has been hiding from police ever since Faull's death, but Telesforo Guerra, McAfee's lawyer in Guatemala, said the tactic was born out of necessity, not guilt. According to McAfee, Guerra is also the uncle of McAfee's 20-year-old girlfriend, Samantha. McAfee said the government raided his beachfront home and threatened Samantha's family.
McAfee's arrest ends one of the most unique international manhunts of the modern tech era. While on the run in Belize, McAfee would tweet his whereabouts and blog about them on his website, all while managing to elude Belize authorities. During his three-week journey, McAfee said he disguised himself as handicapped, dyed his hair seven times and hid in many different places, according to ABC news.
Raphael Martinez, a spokesman for the Belize government, said that if McAfee is deported to Belize, he would immediately be handed over to police and detained for up to to 48 hours unless charges are brought against him.
McAfee, the creator of the McAfee antivirus program, has led an eccentric life since he sold his stake in the anti-virus software company that is named after him in the early 1990s and moved to Belize about three years ago to lower his taxes.
