"Supergirl" TV series cast Melissa Benoist has a pretty solid acting resume. Before landing the superhero role, the 26-year old actress tiptoed from one show to another mostly for minor roles.
The biggest she had was as Marley Rose in musical drama "Glee." Benoist did great as Marley Rose but for her role in "Supergirl" a new challenge arises.
Not only because Supergirl has a huge and critical fan base, it requires new elements other than singing and dancing like what she did in "Glee."
Talking to Comic Book Resources, the main "Supergirl" TV series cast revealed punching is something she can't remember she has done before. So, after learning she got the role, she hit the gym right away.
"Oh, yeah, I did. I immediately [did] -- I am such a pacifist in my everyday life," Benoist said when asked if she changed her workout routine for the role of Supergirl.
"I don't think I've ever hit anyone before, and so I definitely had to learn technique. Like, how to actually punch someone and not hurt yourself more than you're hurting the person you're punching. And so boxing was part of it, and core work and Pilates and biometrics -- a lot of it."
"Yeah, yeah, the motivation there, and the drive, it definitely affects. Because I don't have a choice, and I can't sit down and be like, "Oh, I'm done. I want some popcorn." Like I have to stay on top of my game."
Melissa Benoist is physically fit. However, it is not enough for the main "Supergirl" TV series cast. Since flying is one of the main abilities of the cousin of Superman, Benoist has to perfect her movements while floating on the air. The actress said this is one of the hardest part for preparations for the Supergirl role.
"It's hard. The wirework is really difficult, but so fun. And when you get it right, watching the result is exhilarating. It's a really, really cool feeling to know what it felt like, the energy I had to exert to create those flying scenes. And then the way they look is really rewarding."
Aside from Benoist, other parts of the "Supergirl" TV series cast are Mehcad Brooks as James Olsen, Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, and David Harewood as Hank Henshaw.
