Everybody was expecting "Jane The Virgin" star Gina Rodriguez to nab an Emmy nomination (or a win) this year, but the award giving body had other plans.
The 30-year-old actress was hailed by critics for her role as the titular virgin who gets artificially inseminated in the freshman CW series, calling her the breakout star of the year.
She also won a Golden Globe award earlier this year and even gave one of the best speeches that night. However, it seems that the Emmys didn't find her performance worthy of a trophy or at least a nomination.
According to Washington Post, Rodriguez deserved the recognition, pointing out that she "turned the character into someone growing into herself, spurred along by extraordinary circumstances".
"'Jane the Virgin', a show that simultaneously parodies telenovelas while making great use of the conventions of the genre, has a tremendous supporting cast, a gorgeous palette and the best voiceover on television," the site further said. "But none of it would work without Rodriguez, who wowed reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour last summer with an impassioned speech about Latino characters on television."
Salon also tagged "Jane The Virgin" and Gina Rodriguez' snub as one of the "disappointments" from Emmy Award announcement.
Meanwhile, Ralph Galvan (from the Golden Derby) thought the overlook was purely because of the Emmys' prejudice against the show's network.
"Your performance is universally hailed by critics. You win a Golden Globe for Comedy Actress and pick up both Critics Choice and Television Critics Assn. bids for your comedic chops YET the Emmys snub you Gina Rodriguez just because you're on the CW. Shame TV Academy. Shame on you," Galvan said.
"Jane The Virgin" didn't entirely go unnoticed by the Emmys. According to Fox News Latino, Anthony Mendez received a nomination for his role narrator in the series.
Do you think Gina Rodriguez should get a nomination or is her Golden Globes win enough?
