Toyota ‘Looking For The Bold And The Few’ To Try Mirai FCV As Pre-Orders Begin July 20; Only Qualified Buyers Take Home Hydrogen-Powered EV [Video]

| By

Save the date. Pre-orders for the Toyota Mirai FCV are set for July 20. Deliveries start in October but interested buyers need to qualify first before they get to take home the hydrogen-powered electric vehicle - available only in limited quantities.

To qualify for the Mirai FCV, Toyota said interested buyers have to be California residents. Check out the Japanese automaker's marketing video below:

"Once an applicant is approved, they will be able to place an order with one of the eight California dealers now authorized to sell the car," Green Car Reports said.

Buyers living outside The Golden State will still be able to buy the Toyota Mirai FCV when the hydrogen fueling infrastructure goes up. Toyota reportedly expects the first cars to be delivered in October this year. Afterwards, buyers can expect delivery two to 12 months after placing an order.

"Customers who are not eligible to get a vehicle at the time of their interview can be put on a wait list for future production," Edmunds said.

As per Toyota's estimates, the Mirai FCV gets a 312-mile range on a full tank which makes it the only zero-emission vehicle to break the 300-mile barrier. At 67 MPGe however, it's still not as efficient as its battery-powered rivals.

The Mirai starts at $57,500 although Toyota expects most buyers will opt for the lease option with a $3,649 downpayment and $499 in monthly payments, according to GCR.

"In a bid to coax Californians to buy the Mirai, the company is providing three years - or up to $15,000 worth - of free fuel. Customers also receive three years of 24-hour customer call support and an eight-year, 100,000-mile warranty," Fortune said.
