Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher, shot his girlfriend dead Saturday before turning the gun at himself at Arrowhead Stadium, police confirmed.
The 25-year old former Long Island High School star fatally shot himself in front of two horrified team workers shortly after killing his 22-year-old girlfriend as her mother watched helplessly, the Kansas City Star reported.
The distraught mom called Kansas City police to report the slaying at the home about five miles from Arrowhead, where the Chiefs play their home games.
At about the same time, a call came in to police from the Chiefs' practice facility at the stadium, said Kansas City police spokesman Darin Sapp.
When police arrived around 8 a.m., they saw a black male holding a handgun to his head and speaking with a pair of team officials, Sapp said.
There was a gunshot, and officials placed the stadium under lockdown.
The Kansas City paper reported that the crazed Belcher encountered General Manager Scott Pioli, Coach Romeo Crennel and other team personnel before the suicide.
Belcher and his slain girlfriend had a 3-month-old daughter. The pair were arguing before Belcher went into his homicidal rampage, according to the Star.
"We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning," the Chiefs said in a statement. "We are cooperating with the authorities in their investigation."
Belcher was an All-Suffolk County player at West Babylon High School, where he played linebacker, defensive line, offensive tackle and fullback.
He was also an outstanding wrestler, but pursued his football career at University of Maine. After winning recognition as the Colonial Athletic Association's defense player of the year, the undrafted free agent signed with the Chiefs in 2009.
Belcher was a special teams ace as a rookie, notching a team-high 17 tackles, before moving into the starting lineup a year later.
His West Babylon neighbors were in shock as news of the horrific killings spread Saturday around his hometown.
"That happened in Missouri. We're in West Babylon. We're waiting to hear news, that's it," said Long Island neighbor Corey Jordan.
The Chiefs were scheduled to play Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.
