Remember ‘Flappy Bird?’ It’s Now A 3D Google Cardboard VR App! OnePlus Gives Barebones Virtual Reality Headset For Free If You Pay For Shipping

| By

Back in 2013, "Flappy Bird" was the must-have mobile game. It was so successful that the developer said he was earning $50,000 a day from the app. Ridden with guilt over its addictive nature and overuse, he later took it down disappointing many of its fans. Since then, we've been treated by waves of clones trying to fill the void it left. Now, a 3D version of the game has made its way to Google Cardboard VR.

Now known as "Cardboard Flappy," it takes the original game's addictive gameplay and updates the experience using virtual reality.

"The original 2D version had you tapping on the screen to guide a bird through gaps in vertical pipes as it continuously flew to the right," The Next Web said.

This time, all the action is presented in bird's eye view - literally. All the player sees are the pipes. The headset trigger is pressed to move the bird through the gaps. It can be downloaded from the Play Store for free.

To play "Cardboard Flappy," you'll need the Google Cardboard VR headset and a compatible Android phone. The virtual reality device is easy enough to find with plenty of companies making clones. But with those going for $20 to $30, it can be prohibitive. Smartphone maker OnePlus has a solution.

According to TechCrunch, the Chinese smartphone maker is giving away Cardboard VR headsets for free. You only have to pay for shipping.

OnePlus' version of Cardboard is based on v2.0 which debuted at last month's Google I/O conference. Improvements include a thicker material, a smaller footprint that retains support for six-inch Android devices including the iPhone and a dirt/oil resistant coating on the exterior.

The company's Google Cardboard VR headset can be ordered here although they get snapped up pretty quickly. You'll have to keep trying as OnePlus release them in waves, according to TechCrunch.
