After being teased in a recent trailer, fans can't wait for the return of The Doctor and Clara. In the meantime, Peter Capaldi shared a few details about the "Doctor Who" series 9 plot, guest star Maisie Williams and Jenna Coleman's stint as companion.
Right off the bat, the Doctor will face challenges in the series' two-part premiere, according to Capaldi.
"It places the Doctor in a conflict that is central to his being, as well as containing some subtle tributes to the '60s, and truly wonderful guest performances," he told Entertainment Weekly.
One of these would be the Time Lord's nemesis Missy, the female incarnation of The Master, played by actress Michelle Gomez. The Scot actor described the villain as "more magnificently bad than ever before."
Just like previous series, new and old villains "and some very scary creatures looming in stories with real emotional ambition" will be part of the "Doctor Who" series 9 plot.
Capaldi also talked about guest star Maisie William's performance and described what it's like working with the "sharp, talented tornado" "Game of Thrones" star.
"An an 18-year-old, she has taught me many new words and expressions. All I'll say about her character is she shifts in cosmic ways."
The 57-year-old actor also praised co-star Jenna Coleman's performance as The Doctor's companion Clara Oswald.
"Jenna [continues] to deliver a beautifully nuanced, complex and funny performance that marks her out as one of the best companions ever."
Capaldi hoped that series 9 won't be Coleman's last. After changing her mind about leaving the BBC sci-fi in the last series, rumors suggest the 29-year-old actress will be replaced by Joivan Wade's Rigsy as the Doctor's companion in the finale.

"The photo shows the Doctor about to make a mistake that has cataclysmic repercussions," Capaldi said of the photo.
From what the Doctor himself said, it looks like that scene will have serious consequences for the "Doctor Who" series 9 plot.
"Doctor Who" series 9 release date is scheduled this fall.
