Following the tragic death of their bassist Chi Cheng from a car accident in 2013, Deftones decided to be on a hiatus.
However, two years after the American alternative metal band is reportedly back and already working on a new album.
In an interview with the Blabbermouth, frontman Chino Moreno gamely discussed details about the new record, teasing fans of Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell's involvement with the said new album.
"Jerry is on the new Deftones album," Moreno confirmed. "I didn't know if he wanted anybody to know or not. But I guess I've just spilled the beans. But he came in... There's this one track that... in the demo stages of it, I was, like, 'There's this hole in there...'"
Chino Moreno added that Cantrell is actually a big part of the band's new album.
"In Deftones songs, there's not really any guitar solos per se, but there was a section in there where [there was room for] not necessarily a typical solo, but it had an area where it could use something like what he does, especially... just his style and the way he plays guitar," he revealed.
"So I sent him the track, and then he sent me a demo of it back, like, two days later. So, yeah, when we recorded the song [properly for the album], he came in and laid it down. And it's awesome. It's like you're hearing a Deftones song, but all of a sudden, a little bit of Alice In Chains seeps its way in there, and it's kind of neat. I mean, me, as a fan, I was just sitting back and a little tear came out of my eye."
Furthermore, he said that while he was hesistant at first, this is most probably the best time to include tracks from their unreleased album "Eros" to the new one.
"I get asked about that record a lot," the vocalist admitted in an interview with Rolling Stone . "For a while, I was giving the same answer, 'No, no, no, no, no, no, no.' After Chi's passing, I went back and listened to some of the record and it was a pretty intense experience, to say the least."
Adding, "I think it should be released, but we don't have any definite plans," he explained. "There's some work to do on it. Deftones have been moving forward in a strong, positive motion, so for us to stop and reflect on something five years ago, I don't know if we're ready for that."
The 41-year-old musician also said that while there will be old tracks from their new album, fans would get to hear new music from the band since they have been thinking "outside of the box" for it.
"It's definitely a Deftones record, and it has all the elements that make us who we are," Moreno explained. "We're not going out there to change anything, other than just thinking outside the box."
