Samsung Gear VR Headset: ‘No Plans’ For Exclusive Game Titles Says Exec; Virtual Reality Device Offers Glimpse At Team USA’s Olympics 2016 Preparations!

| By

Despite having plenty of video game titles under its belt since its launch in December 2014, there are "no plans" for developing ones exclusive to the Samsung Gear VR headset unlike its rivals, according to a Samsung exec. Instead, the Korean tech firm wants to focus on entertainment via 360-degree videos with its Milk VR.

Jim Wilson, Samsung Director of Immersive Products revealed as much during an interview with GameCrate at the recently-concluded E3 2015.

"I would say that, you know, our primary focus right now hasn't been games. I mean we're certainly excited about games and, again, it certainly broadens the overall entertainment of Gear VR. So I'd say, at this time, [there are] no plans for exclusive games for Gear VR because we're focused on sort of on our virtual reality concept service, Milk VR."

But as VR Focus pointed out, the Samsung Gear VR headset has "plenty of exclusive content from developers." The website thinks Wilson could be referring to 360-degree videos - "content that Samsung itself is securing."

The Korean virtual reality headset has found use outside the realm of entertainment. Franchise Herald previously reported that YouVisit apps that allow users to explore restaurants and college campuses have been launched.

The Gear VR has even been drafted to offer a glimpse into preparations for Team USA's bid for Olympic glory.

"[Samsung] is teaming up with the United States Olympic Committee for the road to Rio tour starting July 4 in Philadelphia, featuring a series of experiences leveraging the Gear VR virtual reality headset," USA Today reported.

The 2015 USOC Road to Rio Tour Virtual Reality Experience will reportedly be available via Milk VR. Included in the experience are four vides filmed using special camera rigs that capture 360-degree footage that offer a glimpse at how athletes are preparing for Olympics 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.

Beach volleyball players Lauren Fendrick and Brook Sweat; gymnast John Orozco; pole vaulter Mary Saxer and diver David Boudia are among the athletes featured.

The consumer version Samsung Gear VR headset release date is expected later this year.
