While fans are still waiting for Tom Cruise to appear in "Mission Impossible 5," there are already reports claiming that he'll reprise his role as Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell for a "Top Gun 2" movie.

While the sequel to the 1986 hit classic movie that made Cruise famous has been long rumored, it's not until now that the project seemed to be actively progressing.

During the recent presscon of "Terminator Genisys" in Berlin, Skydance CEO David Ellison finally revealed details about the sequel, which will reportedly star "Mission Impossible 5" star Tom Cruise.

According to Collider, the executive revealed that Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is now going to battle drones to update the story with the recent technoligical advancement.

"Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now," Ellison said. "He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today."

He added, "It is very much a world we live in today where it's drone technology and fifth generation fighters ... It's really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today."

And while he did no specifically confirm it, Ellison teased that "Mission Impossible 5" star Tom Cruise is coming back.

"There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie, and there is no 'Top Gun' without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick," Ellison said.

It can be remembered that producer Jerry Bruckheimer also said something about "drones" and its role in "Top Gun 2" movie.

"The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones," Bruckheimer explained of the sequel's plot. "Cruise is going to show them that they're not obsolete. They're here to stay."

"It's just getting to the starting place. Fortunately for Tom, he's very busy, so you have to find a slot he can fit into and get a budget that [studio] Paramount feels they can make the picture."

Cruise also hinted his return in the upcoming project during a previous interview saying,

''With movies, they each have their time - when it's ready to be made. If we can get over some stumbling blocks it will be fun to do," Sky News reported.

Paramount is reportedly determined to bring back "Top Gun" to big screen together with Skydance and Jerry Bruckheimer.

"We'll likely make a Top Gun sequel with Tom Cruise first," Paramount head of production Adam Goodman revealed.
