Android M Release Date Same As Google Nexus 5 2015? Select Sony Xperia Devices Now Support Developer Preview

| By

Unveiled at the 2015 Google I/O conference earlier this year, Android M release date is expected to be around Q3 2015. But if the latest rumors are true, Android's latest iteration could roll out with the update to the Google Nexus 5 smartphone.

Citing its sources, Geek Snack said Android M or Android 6.0 will launch with a new Nexus device, possibly the Nexus 5 2015. Reportedly, two variants of the device are in the works. Korean tech firm LG is developing the smartphone while Chinese company Huawei is working on the tablet.

"While the report cannot be confirmed, we can assume that Android M and the new Nexus device(s) will launch at the same time, as this has been Google's trend for several devices," iDigitalTimes said.

Last year, Android 5.0 Lollipop rolled out with the Nexus 6 smartphone and Nexus 9 tablet. The Nexus lineup is usually the first to get the latest Android OS version. In fact, the Nexus 5, 6, and 9 support the Android M developer preview. But their monopoly has apparently ended.

Last week, Sony announced select Xperia devices can now run OS' developer preview version.

"You can now create a test image of Android M Developer Preview and flash that onto any Xperia device in Sony's Open Device program. The recently released Android M Developer Preview gives developers the necessary tools to prepare for the full Android M release."

The Japanese tech firm did caution its users though that the AOSP (Android Open Source Project) software "is not certified or intended for regular use."

CNET it said, "Given there are other Android M builds expected before the final consumer-ready version, it may not be worth the hassle to try to keep up with Google and its Nexus devices."

As for the OS' dessert-derived moniker, possible contenders include Muffin, Marshmallow and Marmalade although it is known internally as Macadamia Nut Cookie, according to TechRadar. We'll know for sure when the Android M release date comes around in Q3 2015.
