Project Morpheus Release Date, Price Remain Undecided Says Sony Exec: PS4 VR Headset Is ‘New Platform’

| By

Sony was present at the recently-concluded E3 2015. Understandably, many expected the Japanese company to announce an exact Project Morpheus release date but that didn't happen.

The company's head of worldwide studios, Shuhei Yoshida, sat down with Gamespot's "Kinda Funny" stream to share a few details about the PS4 VR headset.

Many noticed that Project Morpheus didn't get as much attention at E3 2015. As Yoshida explained, this was due to the fans not liking "when [they] spend more than two minutes on anything other than core gamers games." Even so, he stressed that things are "going very, very well."

"We have 20 games that are playable at E3. We had to turn down more submissions from both third-parties and first-parties to prioritize what we wanted to show."

Noticeably, no exact Project Morpheus release date was announced at the event. Yoshida said games are being created to be shown during its launch. In doing so, the Sony exec also revealed that they "haven't decided" on when exactly the PS4 VR headset will roll out. He did insist that "the hardware is on schedule."

It's the same story as far as pricing is concerned. Yoshida told Gamespot last March that Sony is trying to keep Morpheus' price as low as possible.

"We try to provide the hardware at the lowest possible cost so that more people can come in."

Despite the lack of details, Sony says it remains committed to virtual reality. Another exec even said that they consider Morpheus as a whole new platform.

In an interview with Forbes picked up by VR Focus, Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Shawn Layden said, "VR for us, it's not a peripheral." He likened the technology's impact on gaming and entertainment to how smartphones changed cell phones.

Project Morpheus release date consumer version is expected in the first half of 2016. The current version has a 1080p OLED display running at 120Hz.
