Virtual reality is now officially supported by YouTube via the Google Cardboard VR headset. A recent update to the online streaming website's Android app makes it possible to watch 360-degree videos.

"The video streaming giant quietly rolled out VR support for their 2D 360-degree videos earlier this month, with no official mention in either their blog or other official information outlets," Road to VR wrote.

For now, this remains an Android-only affair. It hasn't been announced when iOS-powered smartphones will get the Cardboard-compatible app although Road to VR expects "support is soon to follow."

Reportedly, users can access the VR function by typing #360Video in the app's search field. Switch to VR mode by pressing the Google Cardboard icon on the lower right to start watching.

So far, it's still unknown if other VR headsets such as the Samsung Gear VR or the Oculus Rift will support the feature as well.

Ready to experience YouTube's 360-degree videos? A new video has just been released that allows users to step in the shoes of a badass cyborg from the future. Earlier this week, YouTube and Venice-based VR production company Specular Theory launched "Terminator Genisys: The YouTube Chronicles in 360."

"The three-minute clip comes with a simple plot, which is summarized by none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger himself: A Terminator has been set loose in YouTube's Los Angeles studio facility, and it's up to Superwoman and other YouTubers to make sure it doesn't destroy the future of online video," Variety wrote.

Viewers will experience the video through the Terminator's eyes. According to VR Focus, it even "allows full 360 degree viewing control using the mouse or WASD keys." The video can be viewed via Google Cardboard VR.

YouTube star Lilly Singh aka Superwoman posted the video which you can watch below:

"The YouTube Chronicles in 360" is part of the online video streaming giant and Paramount Studios' partnership to promote "Terminator Genisys" which will hit theaters on July 1.
