'Outlander' TV Series Cast Sam Heughan Recalls How He Prepared For Rape Scene And The Thing That Terrified Him While Filming It

"Outlander" season 2 is expected to be bigger than the first, story- and geography-wise. Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jaime Fraser (Sam Heughan) are sailing to France after that painful ordeal in the hands of Jack Black (Tobias Menzies).

Although it has already been a month since the first season's finale, some still cannot get over that rape scene between Jamie and Jack Black. Many shows have done rape scenes before. However, there is not much similar scene featuring two grown males.

Sam Heughan's rape scene in "Outlander" TV series' first season draw different reactions from viewers. Some found it hard to watch while others think it is necessary since it was also in the books.

The actors involved in the scene only had one thing in mind though before filming it. According to Heughan, it took them three weeks to prepare for such controversial "Outlander" sequence.

"We knew it was going to be intense," the Scottish actor told PEOPLE. "But we were very aware of anything graphic or violent and we made sure it was there for a reason. It was just about wrapping yourself in it for a few weeks and living that experience."

He also said that to be able to pull it off smoothly, they rehearsed each movement scene by scene.

"A week before, we went through the script, very much like a rehearsal in theater, so we worked it scene by scene, what we thought worked, what didn't. And then we just blocked it out, which is strange," Heughan said. "But once you got the idea and knew what you wanted the audience to see or not see as well, that sort of set the guidelines for shooting it."

For some people, or actors, the rape scene itself is already terrifying. For Heughan, the thing that terrified him has nothing to do with the torture. It was shot in a dark cell but the actors are okay with it. What he was not able to endure though are the rats lurking behind.

"I didn't know about it. My character was unconscious, so I was lying there pretty much naked and they said, 'Release the rats,' " Heughan recalls with a laugh. "That was a terrifying moment because I didn't really know what they were going to do."
