Though fans of the series have already read Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's detective story, the plot of "Sherlock" season 4 would still rely on Co-creator Steven Moffat and producer Mark Gattiss ideas and when asked about the upcoming season they described it as "darker," more on consequences, 'tougher' and intense. "[Season 4] is going to be... I suppose you'd say... consequences. It's consequences. Chickens come to roost. It's dark in some ways... it's hilarious and exhilarating some days, but some days it's going to be bloody frightening," he said.
As to the showrunners description, it draws to a conclusion that there couldn't be more devastating but to kill another major character.
"While we play fast and loose with the original stories, we generally follow the trajectory of what Conan Doyle did," said Freeman to the UK's Telegraph.
"So [Watson] gets married, and then Mary dies - so at some point presumably she'll die."
On other hand, as opposed to previous rumors Sherlock's adversary, Moriarty, whom we've seen played a big part on the last three seasons would never possibly return again as he have shot himself on the third season.
"The story of Sherlock Holmes isn't Sherlock vs. a criminal mastermind. It just isn't," said Steven Moffat.
The upcoming season will be filmed in 2016, but Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman returns on Christmas special which is set during the Victorian period.
According to idigitaltimes, the Christmas special will be based on the "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle," one of the 56 short stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle for his Sherlock Holmes series.
"We have a plan to top it," said Moffat in interview with Entertainment Weekly.
"And I do think our plan is devastating. We've practically reduced our cast to tears telling them the plan ... we're probably more excited that we've ever been about Sherlock."
