Daughter Killed By Parents for 'Eyeing Boy' in Pakistan

| By

A Pakistani couple has been accused of pouring acid on their 15-year-old daughter after she was caught eyeing a boy, according to a BBC report on Monday.

The girl's parents, Mohammad Zafar and his wife Zaheen, have been arrested for the incident and shared their story from their jail cell. According to the report, the father said his daughter had turned to eye a boy who drove by on a motorcycle, and he told her it was wrong.

The couple's daughter, Anusha, suffered burns on 60 percent of her body before dying.

"She said 'I didn't do it on purpose. I won't look again.' By then I had already thrown the acid. It was her destiny to die this way," the girl's recounted.

The father held the daughter, while the mother went to get the acid and poured it over Anusha as she pleaded for help. The mother showed burns on her arm as a result of the attack on her daughter. The couple said they did it because an elder daughter had already "shamed" the family and they did not want to go through that again.

Anusha's screams were heard by neighbors as she was left to die after the acid was poured on her. The report notes that she tried to commit suicide because the pain was unbearable. During an investigation by the police, Mohammad Zafar said he tried to wipe the acid off of his daughter and blames his wife for killing his daughter. These killings are known as honor killings" and are not uncommon in Pakistan. A staggering 900 girls and women were killed last year under similar circumstances, and the Human Rights Commission believes the number is actually higher due to some incidents which go unreported.
