Michelle Obama and Meryl Streep Interview: The First Lady And The Actress Talk About Moms and Women Empowerment

| By

There may be no better sitdown interview than a chat between Michelle Obama and Meryl Streep, two of the world's most admired women.

People.com recently reported that Michelle Obama and Meryl Streep met at the White House for an "intimate chat" witnessed by MORE magazine, a publication which the First Lady is guest editing.

According to the report, Michelle Obama and Meryl Streep talked about their mothers raising them and becoming a strong woman. While the details of the interview will be out on July/August issue of MORE magazine, People.com got some parts of what they talked about.

When asked about their relationships with their mothers, Michelle Obama and Meryl Streep both praise their moms for being great mentors, People.com said.

"My mentor was my mother. She walked into a room and lit it up, and people were sad when she left," Meryl Streep said in the report. "That, to me, is what really matters: who you touch and how. She was a mentor because she said to me, 'Meryl, you're capable. You're so great.'"

Meanwhile, the First Lady believes she is like her mother. She said, "It's so interesting, because what you say about your mom is a mirror image of what I think about mine. I've got a good mind and a good ability to read people and situations. A lot of that is because that's who my mother is."

Meryl Streep thinks otherwise. She said in the report, "I am not like my mother, so that's why her legacy sustains me. I'm much more of an introvert."

Michelle Obama and Meryl Streep also reportedly talked about the strength of women, with the actress noting that she has played "so many strong women" throughout her career.

"People will say to me, 'You've played so many strong women' and I'll say, 'Have you ever said to a man, 'You've played so many strong men?' No! because the expectation is men are varied," Meryl Streep pointed out.

"Why can't we have that expectation about women? My girls came into the world strong - which was terrifying," the actress added.

The First Lady meanwhile said in the report, "I want to feel like the things I did made a difference. That's one of the reasons I spend time [greeting people] on rope lines, because I'm always thinking, 'Maybe this interaction, particularly if I'm meeting kids, will change someone's life.'"

"That's how I think about the work I do. It's a rare spotlight. I want to make sure I don't waste it," Michelle Obama added.

The entire interview can be read in the July/August 2015 issue of MORE magazine.
