Neil Gaiman's 'Sandman' Movie Adaptation Moving Forward! 'Dark Knight Rises' Star Joseph Gordon-Levitt Says 'It's Slow But Steady'

| By

Following Joseph Gordon-Levitt's announcement that he'll be producing a movie adaptation to Neil Gaiman's classic comic "Sandman" two years ago, there hasn't really been much update about the project.

However, at the Guys Choice Awards, the "Dark Knight Rises" star assured fans that the movie is definitely moving forward.

"It's slow but steady," he told MTV. "It's a really complicated adaptation because those comics, they're brilliant, but they're not written as a whole. It's not like Watchmen, which is a graphic novel that has a beginning, middle, and end. Sandman was written over the course of whatever, I forget exactly, six or seven years. One at a time. One little 20-page issue at a time. And to try to take that and make it into something that's a feature film - a movie that has a beginning, middle, and end - is complicated."

There have been quite a few failed attempts to adapt Neil Gaiman's "Sandman" in both movie and TV show, however what sets Joseph Gordon-Levitt's project apart from the previous attempts was that Gaiman has practically gave his blessing to it.

"Big spectacular action movies are generally about crime fighters fighting crime and blowing s- up. This has nothing to do with that," Gordon-Levitt said. "And it was actually one of the things that Neil Gaiman said to me, he said, 'Don't have any punching.' Because he never does. If you read the comics, Morpheus doesn't punch anybody. That's not what he does. It's going to be like a grand spectacular action film, but that relies on none of those same old ordinary clichés. So that's why it's taking a lot of time to write, but it's going to be really good."

While it there have been rumors claiming that the project had been dropped by Warner Bros. already, Gaiman immediately clarified that it's still a go as he explained the reason why "Sandman" was not included in the list of movies released by the giant studio.

"It's not a DC Comics film. It's a Vertigo film. That's a different slate of films, and a different announcement," Gaiman explained to a fan on Tumblr.

David S. Goyer also assured fans that everything is still right on track and a movie adaptation to Neil Gaiman's "Sandman" will definitely hit the big screen.

"I hesitate to definitively say when it might go before the cameras, but the one thing different between other iterations and ours is that Neil Gaiman has been in the room with us and is a vital part of the team... We have a draft Warners is very happy with and we're moving forward, knock on wood," he said in an interview with Deadline.
