Before the second instalment was released in cinemas, director Elizabeth Banks was a bit hesitant to confirm the release of "Pitch Perfect 3". Now that "Pitch Perfect 2" has earned $259.7 million worldwide, the newbie director declared that another film is most definitely "on."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, both Rebel Wilson and Anna Kendrick will be back for the third instalment. Kendrick confirmed the new film on her Instagram as she posted a photo of herself putting up 3 fingers.
She captioned the shot, "Happening #3."
Wilson also took to Twitter to announce the good news.
"I know I spilt the beans a little while ago," she tweeted. "[But] at least now it's OFFICIAL!! PITCH PERFECT 3, July 21, 2017!!! Sing 'ahhhhh' on 3 pitches x."
While The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that "The Hunger Games" star Elizabeth Banks will back to produce, it's still unclear whether or not she'll have enough time to direct once again or if she'll be reprising her role as the quirky commentator Gail.
Deadline reported that she's also in talks with Universal Studios to direct the movie adaptation of Victoria Aveyard's novel, "Red Queen".
Although Universal already set the third sequel's release date for July 21, 2017, the flow of the story is still unclear.
"If fans embrace it, we are going to seriously think about what the continuing journey would look like, but we don't know what that is yet," Banks previously told Collider before the second film was released.
Wilson, who played fan favorite Fat Amy in the first two films, thought it would be great to delve into her character's back story in "Pitch Perfect 3".
"There was also my backstory in the first movie that never made it on screen," the actress previously told Entertainment Weekly. "The reason that Amy came to Barden University in the first place was that she was on a football scholarship, like she could kick really well."
