A familiar face will return as part of the "Doctor Who" series 9 cast. If rumors are true, it could be in a more permanent role as no less than the Doctor's companion.
"It has been announced by the BBC that Joivan Wade will be returning to the role if Bristol for episode 10 of the forthcoming series," according to a report by Express UK.
Reportedly, Wade will reprise his role as Rigsy for a two-part story penned by Sarah Dollard who also wrote episodes for "Being Human," "Merlin," "The Game" and "Primeval."
The young British actor expressed his gratitude on Twitter for being part of the BBC sci-fi series once again.
Fans may recall that Wade's Rigsy appeared in series 8's episode 9 "Flatline." That episode saw the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) trapped in a shrinking TARDIS. With Rigsy's help, Clara (Jenna Coleman) was able to beat the two-dimensional menace which ended up being called the Boneless.
At this point though, it's still unknown how Rigsy will reconnect with the Doctor and Clara.
However, Rigsy's return to the "Doctor Who" series 9 cast may be followed by a more permanent stint. Some fans have speculated that he could be the Doctor's new companion. The BBC's official "Doctor Who" website describes the character as having "many of the attributes that have helped make the real Doctor's companions so indispensable."
Barry Rice of Fansided's Doctor Who Watch thinks that while Rigsy may be lined up as Clara's replacement, it may be for a future series. Still, he's convinced of the character's potential saying that "it would change the dynamic between the Doctor and his companion in a very refreshing way."
"Rigsy is an interesting character and his youth would play nicely against Capaldi's older, curmudgeonly Doctor."
