Who would have thought that the arrogant vampire in the hit television series "The Vampire Diaries" founded an organization called the Ian Somerhalder Foundation which aims to save the planet from environment woes?
The 36-year-old actor started the Ian Somerhalder Foundation to gather the youth, educators and environmental advocates to distribute funds towards global conservation, and create awareness on global deforestation.
"My dream is a world where sustainability is an attitude, a way of life, the go to, not a duty or hardship," Ian Somerhalder said during the celebration of World Environment Day. "It is a place where governments and businesses and educators make it easy for us to make choices that create a healthy planet and happy people. We all know that this dream can be realized if youth are empowered to unleash their potential."
According to its website, Ian Somerhalder Foundation supports the UNEP Goodwill Ambassadors in the dream to encourage the global community to come together for a better planet, and make pledges to support the environmental Sustainable Development Goals which focus on water, energy, food and natural resources.
The programs initiated by the Ian Somerhalder Foundation range from habitat preservation, the use of green technology, empowering public participation in legislation, green disaster relief, actions against animal cruelty, and many others.
"(The youth's) power propels us towards massive shifts in global consciousness and rippling waves of quantifiable change worldwide. I pledge to encourage their ideas, support their genius, and amplify their infinite potential," the actor added in the statement posted on the website.
