‘Jane The Virgin’ Star Gina Rodriguez Wants To ‘Be Acknowledged For What I Do’! Will She Change The Image Of Minorities On TV?

| By

Even before she won a Golden Globe for her breakout role as Jane Villanueva, "Jane The Virgin" star Gina Rodriguez already wanted to champion the minorities in the TV world.

Now that the CW show has ended its first season and is preparing for the second, Rodriguez still plans to keep on working on her mission.

"I want to change the idea of minorities in the media," the 30-year-old actress reportedly Glam Belleza Latina. "Growing up, I never saw my home life reflected on-screen, and that made me feel a certain way about myself."

She previously shared this "huge mission" to Huffington Post last April, adding that she wants to "choose what's best for my career, my journey and my integrity."

According to People Magazine, Rodriguez is just the fourth Latina to receive a trophy from the Golden Globes and she couldn't help but be amazed by the award.

"I want to be acknowledged for what I do. For people to stop and say, 'She can act her ass off. I want to work with her.'," she further told Glam Belleza Latina.

With more acting offers, she can "tell more stories" and "open up more doors" especially to the least represented people on television.

And it looks like "Jane The Virgin" and Gina Rodriguez are already opening the path for more Latino-focused shows in Hollywood.

"We just have to understand our collective strength," she told the magazine. "Because if 'Jane the Virgin' does well, [Hollywood] is going to open the door for five new shows that are Latino focused. We've already seen this start to happen. 'Jane the Virgin' got a Golden Globe, and this pilot season everybody wants a Latino lead."

"The more we show them that our united front can blow something up, the more they're going to open those doors because it's no longer a risk. This isn't about racism. It's about money."

"Jane The Virgin" and Gina Rodriguez will continue the mission of changing the perception of minorities on TV when the season two airs this Fall.
