Oscar Pistorius sentence was originally for five years in prison. The amputee Paralympic golde medalist was sent to jail February last year for the culpable homicide of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in their home at Pretoria, South Africa.
There was an outrage regarding the 'light' verdict, and looks like Ms. Steenkamp's camp have more reasons to be disappointed as reports say Pistorius could be out of jail by August.
The downgrading of Oscar Pistorius sentence by the South African Commissioner of Correctional Services did not sit well with the victim's parents who fear the decision will not send the right message.
"Reeva had so much to offer this world and we were all robbed of her life when she was killed. As her family, we do not seek to avenge her death and we do not want Mr Pistorius to suffer; that will not bring her back to us. However, a person found guilty of a crime must be held accountable for their actions," the parents of the victim said in a statement.
"Statistics show that our society is under continuous attack from criminals and murderers. Incarceration of 10 months for taking a life is simply not enough. We fear that this will not send out the proper message and serve as the deterrent it should."
The Steenkamp couple also said they have forgiven Pistorius, famously known as Blade Runner, but insists the suspect must pay for his wrong actions.
The shortening of Oscar Pistorius sentence was first reported on June 8. The earlier verdict of five years was deemed by prosecutors "shockingly light, inappropriate and would not have been imposed by any reasonable court." Under South African law, Pistorius is eligible for release under "correctional supervision" once he is done serving a sixth of his sentence.
This recommendation on Oscar Pistorius sentence was from the South African Commissioner of Correctional Services' case management committee at the Kgosi Mampuru II prison in Pretoria.
