"Hannibal" season 3 premiere has aired and true to what series creator Bryan Fuller promised, the show is a little bit different from how the show is told in the past seasons.
Spoiler alert! The pilot did not feature Will Graham (Hugh Dancy). Instead, it was spent dissecting the relationship between Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) and Dr. Bedelia du Maurier (Gillian Anderson) and how they became allies.
The "Hannibal" season 3 premiere is the first time the NBC horror series touched on the past of the cannibalistic doctor. However, according to Fuller, the plan is just to tease the audiences.
"It's not satisfying at all for me as an audience member," Fuller said in an interview with Vox ahead of the "Hannibal" season 3 premiere last June 4.
"The trick there with better understanding Hannibal's past to catch the man in the present is really a device to have our cake and eat it too. The novel Hannibal Rising is breaking a promise made to the audience in Silence of the Lambs, which is Hannibal Lecter stating, "Nothing happened to me. I happened," which I wanted to keep true to."
Fuller also said any digging could ruin what was already built about the behavior of Hannibal Lecter.
"I didn't want to over-explain why he became a cannibal and suggest that his nature is as a result of Nazis eating his sister, which feels like a demystification of the character. For us, it was about suggesting certain things in his past that may have complicated who he is but did not inform who he is. He is and always has been Hannibal, but he is not invulnerable to pain and loss."
"Hannibal" season 3 premiere featured multiple timelines but none of those touched on the childhood of Lecter or during the time when he was still with his family.
The show will return next week for its second episode titled "Primavera."
