Some Android devices are just beginning to get their Lollipop update but the next big update, dubbed Android M, is already on its way. The new OS's developer preview was launched at the recently-concluded Google I/O 2015 developer conference.
"While Android Lollipop introduced a new aesthetic, Android M brings some much-needed stability and usability improvements which might not be as eye-catching, but may prove to be significant additions for a while to come," Android Pit wrote.
Many features were announced along with the roll out of Android M Developer Preview last week. First off, app permissions have not only been simplified, it was overhauled as well. Reportedly, users will have the ability to accept or deny permission as per their preferences. Instead of during installation, app permission will be handled upon using a feature for the first time.
"Android M is giving users greater control of the information apps can access, and this is a truly positive step forward for Android," AP continued.
Devices running the upcoming Android M update will also see improvements to their battery life. A new function called Doze will use motion detectors to see if the device hasn't been interacted with for a long time. In such a case, background processes will be reduced thus improving battery standby time.
"As well as making our batteries last longer, Android M also brings faster charging to the fore with USB-C support," Tech Radar said. Much like rival Apple's Lightning connector, the new type of USB connector can be plugged in either way. Reportedly, Google says USB-C charging is three to five times faster than the current microUSB standard.
Developers may now be able to toy with Android M but consumers will have to wait until Q3 2015. TR thinks it could come in September. As of now, devices that support Android M include the Nexus 5 and 6 handsets, Nexus 9 tablet and Nexus Player.
