"Romnesia" - that is what President Barack Obama believes Republican Mitt Romney is suffering from for changing positions and trying to pivot to the political center.
"He's forgetting what his own positions are, and he's betting that you will too," Obama told a boisterous crowd in Virginia.
"He's changing up so much - backtracking and sidestepping," he said. "We've gotta name this condition that he's going through. I think it's called 'Romnesia.'"
Mitt Romney, the former Mormon governor of Massachusetts, has climber up the polls against Obama since the first presidential debate on October 3, when he sounded a moderate note on healthcare reform and the need for government regulation - highlights of Obama's platform.
Obama appeared more responsive at the second presidential debate on Oct. 16 and has been gaining traction in terms of presidential polls.
Obama told a crowd of about 9,000 in the battleground state of Virginia that Romney was backtracking on his conservative-leaning promises. Obama's campaign has been keeping the "Romnesia" phrase trending on Twitter and Facebook. His campaign tweeted out this statement:
"He's conveniently forgetting what his own positions are ... We need a name for this condition-let's call it #Romnesia." - Barack Obama (@BarackObama) October 19, 2012
The Obama campaign has been slick users of social media. Obama's verified Twitter account has over 21 million followers. At the time of writing, this ranked as the sixth-most followers on Twitter behind Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Rihanna, and Britney Spears and ahead of Taylor Swift.
A PPP survey showed Romney ahead by one point in Iowa, as polls gave few certainties to the outcomes of the race beyond pointing to a likely tight finish.
A CNN/ORC International poll conducted after the second presidential debate showed 49 percent of likely voters in the battleground state of Florida supporting Romney and 48 percent supporting Obama.
