"Mad Max: Fury Road" will hit the theaters on May 15 and many people are excited to see Tom Hardy star as the new Max Rockatansky. That character was popularized by Mel Gibson back in the late 70s and early 80s, which adds more pressure to the 37-year-old actor.
Hardy made his acting debut in "Black Hawk Down" in 2001 and has since then appeared in numerous action and thriller movies including "RocknRolla", "Inception", and "The Dark Knight Rises."
The London-born actor has earned the reputation of being the "hard man" in Hollywood.
During an interview with Essentials magazine (via Yahoo! NZ), Tom Hardy shared his sentiments against the movie industry in America. "People didn't sit up and take any notice of me until I started putting on weight, kicking people and being aggressive!" he admitted.
"The trouble with Hollywood is that they want you to be something, then they think you're who they wanted you to be. I'm not a fighter. I'm a petite little bourgeois boy from London," the British heartthrob added.
The star of "Mad Max: Fury Road" also revealed his secret, which is something that he probably regret. Tom Hardy went to rehab for drug addiction and alcohol abuse when he was still in his mid 20s. He also admitted that he would do anything for drugs. "I would have sold my mother for a rock of crack," he said. Thankfully, he was able to overcome his addiction and has been sober since 2003.
"I was a shameful suburban statistic. I was told very clearly, 'you go down that road, Tom, you won't come back. That's it. All you need to know'," he confessed. "And that message stayed with me clearly for the rest of my days. I am f***ing lucky to be here, to be honest."
In a separate interview with NY Times, Tom Hardy expressed how grateful he is having been considered for big projects such as "Mad Max: Fury Road." "I'm lucky to be an actor," he said. "There's no life or death here, just humiliation."
