Could the 'Mystery Giant Eyeball Belong to a Bigeye Thresher Shark?

| By

A giant mystery eyeball was discovered on a Florida beach on Wednesday and now it is believed the giant eyeball belongs to a bigeye thresher shark.

The "mystery eyeball," as it's being referred to by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, was found by a Gino Covacci on Pompano Beach, The Sun Sentinel reports. The eyeball is

It might not be a mystery as to which creature this eyeball belongs to. George Burgess of the Florida Museum of Natural History believes the mystery eyeball belongs to a bigeye thresher shark, a protected species caught incidentally off Florida in moderately deep water, according to a blog by Pete Thomas, a former Los Angeles Times outdoors reporter.

"My guess is that a fisher did a bit of dissection at sea then was reminded it was illegal to possess even 'parts,' " said Burgess, a leading authority on sharks and shark attacks.

Meanwhile, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) have not yet released any news on which creature this mystery eyeball may belong to. On their Facebook page, FWC spokeswoman Carli Segelson notes the eyeball will be sent for analysis to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute in St. Petersburg.

Segelson said the eyeball is slightly larger than a baseball and presumably belonged to some kind of marine animal. "We're hoping to determine what kind, but at this point we just don't know," Segelson said.

The commission posted a photo of the giant eyeball to their Facebook page, along with the caption: "Perfect timing for Halloween: 'The Mystery Eyeball.'"

Meanwhile, many have posted on FWC's facebook page their guesses as to which creature this giant eyeball belongs to.

"I bet it is from a giant squid," writes one. "Could it be the " EYE OF THE STORM"???? OR perhaps the "EYE O," another one jokes.
