Toyota Motor Corp. is voluntarily recalling 7.43 million vehicles in the U.S., Japan, Europe and elsewhere around the world due to a power window problem that poses a fire risk.
In the U.S., a total of 2.5 million vehicles sold under the Toyota and Scion brands are being recalled, according to Reuters.
The range of Toyota cars affected worldwide include certain models of the Yaris, Vios, Corolla, Matrix, Auris, Camry, RAV4, Highlander, Tundra, Sequoia, xB and xD produced between 2005 and 2010.
Toyota said it will be contacting drivers with the affected models over the coming weeks and asking them to bring their car in for checks to see if there is a fault.
This is the largest safety-related service action the maker has announced since it began a series of recalls related to the risk of unintended acceleration in late 2009. That and other safety issues led Toyota to recall 14 million vehicles in 2009 and 2010.
Toyota's recall is the largest since Ford Motor Co pulled back 7.9 million vehicles in 1996.
Many of the vehicles involved in the new Toyota recall also were called back one or more times due to unintended acceleration issues.
Toyota's Latest sales figures released earlier this week show Japanese carmakers' sales to China fell sharply last month, with Toyota's dropping by almost 50 percent.
