'Orphan Black' Season 3 Episode 4 Recap: Why Did Helena Chose Not To Escape When She Had A Chance?

| By

The latest "Orphan Black" season 3 episode is probably the most intense so far this year. The episode called "Newer Elements if Our Defense" was complete with comedy, action, and drama.

All major female clones (Tatiana Maslany) also had their fair share of exposure but one scene that might have left the audiences on the edge of their seats is Helena's at Castor facility.

Ever since the "Orphan Black" season 3 premiere, the assassin clone has been held prisoner by Castor. Last night, she had the chance to run away but she ditched her plan in the last minute. After seeing one male clone (Ari Millen) inside a certain laboratory, she thought of having some small talk.

Turned out, that clone is currently the subject of an experiment with his brain bared open. The male clone is suffering what from Castor is doing to him and so, he requested for euthanasia from Helena, of all people. The Ukrainian obliged. However, that caused her freedom as soldiers arrived to re-capture her.

Helena could have been out of prison in the latest "Orphan Black" season 3 episode but her decision to confront the male clone did not help her cause. Why did she do it? Series co-creator Graeme Manson said it is part of her complexity.

"Well, Helena's a pretty complex character and I think she can look at him in that chair and she can see herself in that same position many times in her life-held prisoner, used and abused for another person's end. So there is an element of a mercy kill to that," Manson said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

"But there's also an element of destroying whatever data and science that they're getting from this guy, so she mercy kills the victim and kinda screws over Project Castor in the same blow."

The scene wherein Helena stabbed the clone's bared open brain was one of the nastiest this season. John Fawcett said it is one of those he loved the most from the show.

"There's a lot of things going on in that scene, and I love it," Fawcett said. "Obviously, I love the horror of it and I love doing that stuff, but it's a really weird emotional scene as well-from Tat's performance to the quality of the music and then there are just so many things going on. I think it turned out really well."

Next "Orphan Black" season 3 episode will air next week and is titled "Scarred by Many Past Frustrations."
