"Sherlock" season 4 is nearly here and details of what Sherlock Holmes (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) and Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman) will face are making fans excited for next year.
Previous reports suggested that the upcoming new episodes will be darker than previous seasons. Showrunner Steven Moffat promised to surpass the first three seasons of the BBC show and with the current speculations, it looks things will be getting even more complicated soon.
In a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly, the executive producer warned fans that Sherlock, Dr. Watson and Mary's (Amanda Abbington) happy little bubble won't last very long.
"You can sort of see that in the way series 3 went. It's great that he's back and John's got a wife and Sherlock likes her and isn't it adorable, and then it all goes to hell," he teased. "Remember where we left them."
He added that the three characters will certainly be put "through the mill".
"It's going to be more of an emotional upheaval," he continued.
"Sherlock" season 4 won't be all that dark and devastating, however.
"Hopefully enjoyable and fun, all the things Sherlock must always be," Moffat disclosed, but it will be "tough at times."
"Maybe that's the word? A tougher series," he continued.
Could this "upheaval" that he's talking about be Mary's impending death? There have been several speculations about this particular story arc.
Martin Freeman himself was quoted by The Telegraph in a past interview that the show will "generally follow the trajectory of what Conan Doyle did". In the original novels, Mary does die which will bring Watson back to the apartment to live with Sherlock.
We left season three with a pregnant Mary. Will her possible death in "Sherlock" season 4 also affect the baby or will Watson be left with baby?
Meanwhile, the show's Christmas special, which is set to air later this year, has been confirmed to take place in the year 1895. Cumberbatch, Freeman, Abbington and other cast members were spotted filming around London in Victorian-era clothes.
