Fox TV show "The Last Man on Earth" aired its final episode for its first season a few days ago and offered a lot of twists and interesting plots for its second season.
Lead character Phil Miller (Will Forte) was kicked out of Tuscon for his shenanigans. The second Phil Miller 2 (Boris Kodjoe) and other survivors decided Tandy is dangerous for everyone and so he needs to leave the city where he grew and where his parents were buried.
At the end of the episode, the show's first Phil Miller did not really end up alone. Carol (Kristen Schaal), his first ever companion and former wife came to his aid. After singing a song he made for her, the two decided to go away together and start over again.
The penultimate "The Last Man on Earth" episode may have brought back Phil and Carol together but what about the other characters? What about Todd (Mel Rodriguez) and Melissa (January Jones) who fans grew to love? With two first major cast deciding to leave everyone behind, is there still room for Todd and Melissa in the show?
Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the show's executive producers, sat down with Grantland shortly after "The Last Man on Earth" finale and was asked this very question. According to them, the fate of Todd and Melissa is still at 50-50.
"It's all up in the air. Part of it is that we haven't started writing the second season yet," Lord said of "The Last Man on Earth" season 2.
"I don't wanna box Will in in the writing. It'd be kind of a dick move ... It certainly seems like there's a lot of possibilities. I have always wanted to, with every episode that we're making, to feel like the show changes from week to week."
Miller, on the other hand, explained the twist in the finale is what sets "Last Man on Earth" season 2 dynamic.
"It reminds you of how the dynamic of the show can keep shifting. It reminds you that you can shake up the dynamic of the show in various different ways that aren't always just adding new characters. The moment it settles into a routine, that's when it gets away from the heart of the concept."
