'Grey's Anatomy' Season 11 Latest Casualty Patrick Dempsey Says Shonda Rhimes Cares For Fans Despite His Character Getting Killed Off

| By

So the latest "Grey's Anatomy" season 11 episode killed off one character, probably the one that writers should have not touched at all if they will do a survey.

For more than ten years of the ABC show, Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) has been the main character, the heart of the show, reason why most think he will go as far as where the show goes. In addition to that, Dempsey signed a two-year contract with the series that will keep him until the 12th season. However, the "How to Save a Life" happened last week. He died and whole Grey's fandom went berserk.

There were a lot of reactions regarding the latest "Grey's Anatomy" season 11 episode but the gist is, the public is annoyed that Shepherd had to go.

The recipient of the hate, of course, is series creator and showrunner Shonda Rhimes. The show is not shy from bidding farewell to its top stars. It has happened before. While Rhimes has that kind of habit, show's latest casualty Dempsey says Shonda does not meant to hurt fans, that she cares about their feelings.

"The fans care deeply. I think Shonda cares deeply about the fans and how they will react," Dempsey told Entertainment Weekly in an interview meant to review what transpired in that forgettable "Grey's Anatomy" season 11 episode.

"Shepherd is a beloved character. People don't want to lose him. He's been in their lives for over 10 years. And multiple generations have discovered him. On Netflix, 8 million a week come into the show, which is remarkable. They are passionate around the world. I get to travel around the world to race and people know who Shepherd is. It's humbling. It is tough. I'm still processing it. It's very new for me."

Dempsey also revealed that it was Shonda Rhimes herself who wrote that episode.

When asked about how he feels about that episode, Dempsey has this to say:

"The story should be impactful to close it out for the fans. I think it's going to be very moving. I have no idea what the impact will be or how the final cut will turn out."
