Consumers are thinking more about their health than ever, evident from the menu changes that many fast food places, including McDonalds and Burger King, are undergoing.
Kraft Foods Group Inc is now jumping on the health bandwagon, as the company announced on Monday that it would be removing synthetic colors and preservatives from its popular macaroni and cheese, according to Reuters.
Kraft spokeswoman Lynne Galia reportedly stated that the adjustments were being made to address the demands of improved nutrition and “simpler ingredients” among consumers.
“We know parents want to feel good about the foods they eat and serve their families,” Galia explained in an emailed statement regarding the changes to the Kraft Macaroni and Cheese.
The new-and-improved macaroni and cheese will replace synthetic colors with those that are derived from natural sources, according to USA Today. The “Original Kraft Macaroni and Cheese” will reportedly be sold in the United States starting January 2016.
Although there will be changes to the family-friendly Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, Kraft reportedly insists that the meal will remain very much like what it looks and tastes like currently, even after its makeover.
“Our loyal fans told us they don’t want their Kraft Mac and Cheese to look or taste different,” stated Galia.
“We’ve worked hard so the new recipe will have the same look and taste that people know and love from the iconic blue box.”
Kraft’s recent decision follows a petition that was launched by food blogger, Vani Hari. Hari’s petition reportedly garnered more than 350,000 online signatures.
“This sends a signal to American companies that food dyes are from the 1950s and people want more natural foods,” explained Michael Jacobson, executive director at the Center for Science.
