While George R.R. Martin is scrambling for "Winds of Winter" release date, fans of the highly acclaimed novel franchise might have to steer clear of watching the TV series adaptation, "Game of Thrones."
The showrunners have revealed that hit HBO series is heading toward the "same destination" as that of the novel.
Executive producer David Benioff talked about the "Game of Thrones" progress at Oxford University last Mar 20, in his speech he admitted that while the show will most likely have some deviations from the novel it could however spoil the "Winds of Winter" novel.
"We know where things are heading," said David Benioff, who executive produces the series alongside D.B. Weiss, who was also present at the talk. "We will eventually meet up at pretty much the same place that George is going. There might be some deviations along the route, but we're heading toward the same destination."
"I wish there were some things we didn't have to spoil," Benioff told the people in the conference. "We are kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place."
Many are hoping that George R.R. Martin and the TV producers could somehow find a way to avoid the unfortunate event of spoiling one from the other.
However, with "Winds of Winter" and the seventh and final book "A Dream of Spring" still in working progress it's most likely that "Game of Thrones" series finale would be released first, thus it could spoil the novels.
"We were hoping the books would come out ahead of the show, but at the same time, George has his process, and if it takes him 20 years to finish the series, that's what it should take him," Benioff said.
Benioff on the other hand, promised fans that while the show and the novels are heading the same direction, they could still expect some exciting revelations from either the book and the "Game of Thrones" TV show.
"There are certain things that are going to happen in the books that are different from the show," he said.
