While a movie adaptation is well on its way, "The Last of Us 2" PS4 release date is reportedly in jeopardy despite the strong sales and great reviews from critics.
Naughty Dog video game developer Neil Druckmann said that he's still feels "50/50" about making a sequel.
"We have such limited resources, and it's a question of where you put the resources," the director said in an interview. "It's something where we can have a feel of where the demand is, and where our time is best spent. It's something that we'll figure out as we move forward."
However, he could reportedly reconsider bringing Ellie and Joel back if original voice actors Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson decide to reprise their roles for a game sequel.
"I'd probably reconsider the story [if Troy and Ashley didn't return]. They are Joel and Ellie to me," he said in a Reddit AmA in February.
In addition it's unlikely that "The Last of Us 2" release date would be announced, now that Naughty Dog is busy and focused with "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End" for now.
Game Spot previously reported that game director Bruce Straley is open about the idea of "The Last of Us 2" but it will remain "on ice" for now as the team is preoccupied with the "Uncharted" sequel.
"We're 110 percent in Uncharted 4 territory now," Straley said. "Blinders on, make this awesome."
"We totally get it, because we have those same feelings as well. We have brainstormed sequel ideas for The Last of Us, and we've brainstormed ideas for new games, but all of that is put on ice right now while we work on Uncharted 4."
And if "The Last of Us 2" PS4 pushes through it will most likely be a reboot rather than a sequel, following Druckmann's statement that "he won't want to compromise that ending with a sequel. The development team at Naughty Dog might opt for a new story with never-before-seen characters instead."
In addition, the release date if considered would most likely be in 2017.
