The upcoming Floyd Mayweather Jr. - Manny Pacquiao fight is the biggest in recent generation.
Thus, it is not surprising if this will also rake in the highest amount of profit once it takes place on May 2 at the MGM Grand Arena. According to a report by the Associated Press' TIm Dahlberg, the previously broadcast $300 million earnings of the mega boxing fight will be surpassed as the fight nears. From the total amount, Floyd and Manny will split 60 percent to 40 percent based on what the two fighters have agreed on upon signing the contract.
If the Floyd Mayweather Jr. - Manny Pacquiao fight break records, Top Rank CEO Bob Arum said that should not be a surprise.
''For whatever it's worth, the buildup over these years has certainly enhanced the fight,'' said Bob Arum who is also Manny Pacquiao's promoter. ''Everybody knows about it now, even people who don't follow boxing. Plus we have a good economy, unlike in 2009 when people were out of work and didn't have the money to spend.''
''That's the one element that's a mystery. 'It seems like it will break the record, but who really knows? Anyone who predicts the total pay-per-view is whistling in the dark.''
One factor that could definitely raise the profit in the Floyd Mayweather Jr. - Manny Pacquiao fight are the ticket sales and the pay-per-view.
On the same AP report, Arum said "the gate at the MGM alone will be more than $72 million, obliterating the previous live gate record of $20 million in Nevada set by Mayweather's 2013 fight with Canelo Alvarez."
In a separate interview with ESPN, Arum said although the tickets for the Floyd Mayweather Jr. - Manny Pacquiao fight will be a lot higher compared to other fights, people's interest will remain. In fact, when the tickets starts selling on the market, it will be a "mania."
"It's crazy, but it is what it is," Arum told ESPN. "It's amazing. We'll probably have a handful of tickets that will go on sale to the public next week. It's mania."
