Professional wrestler Hijo del Perro Aguayo, one of the most popular in Mexico, died during a tag-team match in Tijuana.

His funeral was held Sunday in Guadalajara in central Mexico, the Daily Mail reported.

It was supposedly a celebratory fight for Rey Mysterio's first fight in AAA after he left WWE, but his flying kick has hit hard Aguayon on the neck and fell unconscious on the rope. The match continued for two minutes until the referee and other wrestlers realized he was seriously injured.

According to San Diego Red he lost consciousness and never recovered. He was taken to a nearby hospital but pronounced dead around 1:30 am on March 22.

An autopsy has been revealed by Baja California state prosecutor's office that Aguayo died from trauma to the neck and a cervical fracture, Washington Post reported.

The Daily Mail added that the prosecutor has opened an investigation into possible manslaughter, but in dilemma whether to file chargers.

"On Sunday, Gutierrez said that no arrest order had been issued for the other wrestler, though he did not discount that he would be called in for questioning," the Daily Mail continued its report.

Meanwhile, other wrestlers paid tribute to the most celebrated luchador.

"It makes me very sad because he was a professional colleague and I have great affection for his father," Wrestler Hijo del Santo said.

"I think the fans in Japan, the US and Mexico, of course, where he was very popular, must be in mourning, especially because of his youth."

"He had much ahead of him."

Aguayo's father Pedro 'Perro' Aguayo on the other hand did not speak to reporters, though his mother has released a statement in response to her son's controversial death.

"We, as relatives of Pedro, want to thank all of you for the affection and respect you have shown for Pedro, and you will understand that we are in no condition to comment with respect to the death of Pedro," Aguayo's mother Luz Ramirez said in her statement.
