Following reports that "Star Wars 7" has already concluded its production, all eyes are now on its future films.
While it has been confirmed that there will be two more "Star Wars" movies and three spin-off films, details about the upcoming installment of the franchise has been kept secret.
Now, Variety exclusively reports new details about the first of "Star Wars" spin-off movies and "Episode VII."
Disney and Lucasfilm reportedly announced the standalone film's official title, to be directed by "Godzilla" director Gareth Edwards.
In addition to the official title which is, "Rogue One" the giant studio has also announced the first cast of the movie, which is scheduled for Dec. 16, 2016 release date and will start production in London this summer.
The indie English actress who received a Grammy nomination for her highly acclaimed portrayal of Stephen Hawking's wife, Jane, in "The Theory of Everything" has been confirmed to star in the first "Star Wars 7" spin-off movie.
Prior to Jone's casting, "Orphan Black" lead cast Tatiana Maslany and "Pan" star Rooney Mara were also linked in the project.
The three reportedly auditioned for the show, Maslany was once reported to have even bagged the lead role for "Rogue One," according to Total Geek.
Meanwhile, release date for the sequel to "The Force Awakens," which has no title still, has also been announced by Disney in addition to the official title of the first of "Star Wars 7" spin-off movies.
"Star Wars Episode VIII," which will be written and directed by Rian Johnson (Looper), will officially be released on May 26, 2017.
While no cast has yet to be announced, it is expected that names would be announced soon.
Bob Iger previously shared the company's plans for "Star Wars" franchise during his podcast interview with Get Your Geek On.
"As one of the few people allowed to visit the set during filming....and one of the fewer who's seen most of the footage...I can assure the millions of 'Star Wars' fans who have spent the last decade hoping for a new movie this one will be worth the wait. And it's only the beginning of a new era of exceptional Star Wars storytelling; next year we'll release our first standalone movie based on these characters, followed by 'Star Wars: Episode VIII' in 2017, and we'll finish this trilogy with Episode IX in 2019."
