One Direction, the British pop-sensation boy band, is set to play tonight at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMA's) and fans area already going crazy ahead of tonight's performance. Other stars who have also arrived at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, like Rihanna and Nicki Minaj, are also causing quite a stir.
One Direction, which consists of Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Liam Payne, are set to make their debut VMA performance tonight during the main show, which kicks off at 8 p.m. ET/PT. They are up for three awards tonight: Best New Artist, Best Pop Video and Most Share-Worthy Video.
Usually the awards show starts at 9 p.m. but MTV moved up the start time so the show would not conflict with President Barack Obama's speech at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., which is scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. EDT.
Also for the first time MTV will announce an award via Facebook. Best rock video will be given out early in the show's run via a "Thank You Cam" live stream that can only be accessed at MTV's Facebook page.
Meanwhile, fellow Brit Robert Pattinson will also be attending the MTV VMA's alongside co-star Taylor Lautner and other cast membero introduce new footage from "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2."
Fellow "Twilight" star and on-screen and off girlfriend Kristen Stewart will not be attending or presenting with the rest of the crew. She's expected to be at the Toronto Film Festival that same day, where she will attend a special screening of her film "On the Road." This will be Stewart's first public appearance since admitting to cheating on Pattinson back in July.
The lineup of performers this year includes One Direction, Pink and Alicia Keys, who'll debut a new song from her upcoming album, "Girl on Fire." In addition, Taylor Swift will give the first televised performance of "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together." Rihanna will perform a remix of her song "Cockiness (Love It)" with A$AP Rocky, and then segue into "We Found Love" with help from Calvin Harris, who wrote and produced it.
Green Day and Frank Ocean will also perform, as will Nicki Minaj, with a "secret guest." Lil Wayne, who closed last year's VMA telecast, will return to debut his new single, "No Worries."
As far as presenters go, Katy Perry will hand out the first award of the night, and the rest of the presenter lineup includes Demi Lovato, Ke$ha, The Wanted, Miley Cyrus, Mac Miller, Andy Samberg, Rashida Jones and the gold medal-winning U.S. Women's Gymnastics Team, aka The Fierce Five.
