Tesla is recalling about 27,000 Cybertrucks because of a problem with the rearview camera. This issue causes a delay in showing the camera image on the dashboard, which could increase the chances of a crash.
When the Cybertruck is put in reverse, the rearview display might stay blank for up to 8 seconds. This is longer than the 2 seconds required by US safety rules.
Tesla Cybertruck Faces Fifth Recall
To fix this problem, Tesla is providing a free software update that can be done over the air. This means drivers can get the update without having to visit a service center. While waiting for the fix, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) suggests that drivers use their mirrors and do shoulder checks when backing up their Cybertrucks.
Tesla will send out letters about the recall by November 25. If owners have questions, they can call Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752.
This is the fifth time Tesla has recalled the Cybertruck since it first came out last year. One of the previous recalls happened in June because there were concerns about the truck's big windshield wiper and a piece of plastic trim along the edge of the truck bed that could become loose while driving.
Earlier this year, there was a recall in April about the accelerator pedal possibly getting stuck, according to CNN. In January, Tesla recalled 2.2 million vehicles, including Cybertrucks, because the warning lights had letters that were too small to read. This issue was fixed with another software update.
Even with these recalls, Tesla recently reported a rise in sales. The company delivered nearly 463,000 vehicles worldwide in the third quarter of this year, which is a 6% increase compared to last year. However, Tesla's overall sales for this year are still lower than they were in 2023.
Safety Concerns Lead to Multiple Cybertruck Recalls by NHTSA
The NHTSA stated that the Tesla Cybertruck does not meet safety standards for rear visibility. To address the rearview camera issue, Tesla is rolling out a free software update for affected vehicles.
The recall identification for this issue is SB-24-00-016. There have also been other recalls related to the Cybertruck's truck bed trim that could come loose and the windshield wiper system that might not work properly.
In August, the NHTSA announced that over 11,000 Cybertrucks were recalled because the truck bed trim could detach while driving. This could be very dangerous because it could hit other cars on the road.
Additionally, the June recall involving nearly 12,000 Cybertrucks was because of a problem with the windshield wiper motor. If the wiper doesn't work, it could make it hard for the driver to see, which could lead to accidents, USA Today reported.
