Fans of the long-running crime procedural drama "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" was left biting their nails in anticipation for a renewal or cancellation. Thankfully, the "CSI Cyber" pilot episode aired right after the finale, offering avid viewers another promising spinoff of the crime series.
According to Deadline, the new show - headlined by Oscar winning actress Patricia Arquette - premiered to "ok" ratings last Wednesday.
It reportedly raked in a 1.8% for the 18-49 adult demographic, .8% more than ratings for the "Battle Creek" premiere last Sunday.
Being a show that's heavily based on technology, experts couldn't help but assess its authenticity and believability. Unfortunately, "the show's technical accuracy failed to impress" the experts that Today interviewed.
One such resource person noted that the "CSI Cyber" pilot episode seemed "technically implausible and frankly ridiculous."
"The resolution to the entire story doesn't really even involve technology," Chester "Chet" Wisniewski, senior security adviser at Sophos, commented, referring to the car chase towards the end of the episode.
"Cyber forensic analysis doesn't move at the speed of a TV show," Ivan Shefrin, vice president of TaaSera, a security solution company, also told Today.
"While it can take minutes or less for a hacker to penetrate a home computer, the process of gathering and analyzing computer and network forensic evidence unfortunately takes much longer."
The same issue - of how fast a crime is solved using the evidence from a crime scene - had been raised in the past for the freshman series' sister show, "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation." Despite its flaws, it was able to continue airing for 15 seasons. Will "CSI Cyber" experience the same longevity?
Meanwhile, Gizmodo also commented on "CSI Cyber" being "a formulaic, corporate-spit-shined, bland piece of crap." However, it "is nonetheless immensely comforting and entertaining that'd probably be a welcoming respite if you stumbled upon it in an airport."
