"Star Trek" actor Leonard Nimoy dies at the age of 83.

His wife Susan Bay Nimoy has confirmed to The New York Times that Mr. Spock's death was due to end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He had been hospitalized earlier this week and succumbed to death in his Los Angeles home on Friday.

Last year he revealed on Twitter that the ailment was associated with smoking - he quitted 30 years ago.

"I quit smoking 30 yrs ago. Not soon enough. I have COPD ... Smokers, please understand. If you quit after you're diagnosed with lung damage it's too late. Grandpa says learn my lesson. Quit now. LLAP," Nimoy tweeted in separate posts last year.

Leonard Nimoy was known for his role as Mr. Spock on "Star Trek," a half-vulcan half human counterpart of Shatner's Captain Kirk. Though "Star Trek" only lasted for three season in 1966 until 1969, he was able to reprise his role for "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" in 1979. It was then followed by sequels "The Wrath of Khan" (1982), "The Search for Spock" (1984), "The Voyage Home" (1986), "The Final Frontier" (1989) and "The Undiscovered Country" (1991), Variety reports.

Nimoy, who was able to reprise his role for 40 years, has directed "3 Men And A Baby" and "Star Trek" films like "The Search For Spock" and "The Voyage Home."

He also voiced characters on the "The Simpsons," "Atlantis: The Lost Empire," "Transformers: The Movie" and "The Pagemaster."

Aside from being an actor, Nimoy was also a poet, writer, photographer and musician.

His photographs have been showcased in art galleries and in published works like "The Full Body Project: Photographs by Leonard Nimoy" and "Shekhina."

The 83-year-old multitalented actor released five albums via Dot Records that include "Mr. Spock's Music From Outer Space."

Leonard was survived by his two children from his marriage to Zandra Sober, wife Susan Bay Nimoy and several grandchildren.
