While superhero movies dominated the film industry for the past years, it took a lot of beating from the recently concluded Film Independent Spirit Awards and the Academy Awards.
However, "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" director James Gunn was not one to take the criticisms sitting down.
The award-winning director took to Facebook to respond to the series of backlash superhero movies received during the prestigious award giving bodies.
In his long statement, "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" director James Gunn pointed out that he is bothered by some people's assumption the "because you make big films that you put less love, care, and thought into them then people do who make independent films or who make what are considered more serious Hollywood films."
Furthermore, he mentioned that while superhero movies are accused of being an easy way to earn big money, he has made enough films ranging from various categories to say that it's not only in "big films" that you find people "making movies for a buck or to feed their own vanity."
"In all honesty, I do no find a strikingly different percentage of those with integrity and those without working within any of these fields of film," he claimed in his statement.
"Guardians of the Galaxy 2" director James Gunn ended his statement with a very challenging remark to those people who are criticizing filmmakers of superhero movies.
"If you think people who make superhero movies are dumb, come out and say we're dumb," he wrote.
"But if you, as an independent filmmaker or a 'serious' filmmaker, think you put more love into your characters than the Russo Brothers do 'Captain America,' or Joss Whedon does the 'Hulk,' or I do a talking raccoon, you are simply mistaken."
"Night Crawler" director Dan Gilroy previously blasted the "tsunami of superhero movies" in his acceptance speech at 2015 Independent Spirit Award for best first feature.
"Independent film, the foundation and everybody here today, I think are holdouts against a tsunami of superhero movies that have swept over this industry," said Gilroy. "We have survived and we have thrived and I think that's true spirit."
Jack Black, on the other hand, made fun of the superhero movies in the Academy Awards opening ceremony through a song number with Neil Patrick Harris.
"Stop! This is what you sound like: movies, movies, wow, they rock. Listen up, kid, it's all a big crock. Now it's market trends and fickle friends and Hollywood baloney. Believe me, Neil, you're better off just polishing your Tony. This industry's in flux, it's run by mucky-mucks pitching tents for tentpoles and chasing Chinese bucks. Opening with lots of zeroes, all we get are superheroes: Spider-Man, Superman, Batman, Jedi Man, Sequel Man, Prequel Man, formulaic scripts! And after Fifty Shades of Grey they'll all have leather whips! In a world where our greens dropping common machines, only screens we'll watch them on are the screens in our jeans. Screens in our jeans! Screens in our jeans! The only screens we'll watch them on are the screens in our jeans!"
